Seedfolks
Santa Cecilia High School students taking the course English 9A are reading the book Seedfolks, a short novel written by Paul Fleischman. The story is told by a diverse cast of thirteen characters living on Gibb Street in Cleveland, Ohio, each from a different ethnic group.
Chapter by chapter, each character describes the transformation of an empty lot into a vibrant community garden, and in doing so, they each experience their own transformations. A Vietnamese girl plants six lima beans in a Cleveland vacant lot. Looking down on the immigrant-filled neighborhood, a Romanian woman watches suspiciously. A school janitor gets involved, then a Guatemalan family. Then muscle-bound Curtis, trying to win back Lateesha. Pregnant Maricela. Amir from India. A sense of community sprouts and spreads.
As part of the course, each High School student is writing a chapter about a character they create.
